Happy Juneteenth!

This dessert is an homage to the work of Nicole Taylor (@foodculturist) who wrote the first modern cookbook dedicated to the Juneteenth holiday. There is a long history of red foods in the African diaspora. Red foods have been used in celebration from the time of enslavement to the present era.  And, they were also found in celebratory food from the time before our ancestors were taken from their homes on the African continent. Sorrel is a red drink made with hibiscus flowers and spices that span the diaspora - Africa, the Caribbean, Mexico, and across the United States. The red, green, and black honor the blood, the people, and abundance of our history. (Written by Chef Aimee Graham)
